Department Description

“Small classes, smart students, an outstanding faculty, and intriguing research opportunities are combined to create a meaningful and exhilarating educational experience of the highest quality,” says Scott Smith, chair of the Whiting School’s department of Computer Science.

While students and faculty in Computer Science collaborate across departments and disciplines and are involved in a wide range of research activities, the department focuses on five primary areas of study:

At the undergraduate level, students are encouraged to conduct research and take part in internships and can work with faculty to design courses that suit their specific needs and interests. At the graduate level, M.S.E. students can choose from two tracks of study: one that is based in course work and another that includes a research component. Ph.D. candidates are carefully matched with faculty advisors based on mutual research interests, with the expectation that through the experience, they develop strong research skills and establish their own reputations as research scientists.

Whiting School computer science graduates are aggressively recruited by industry leaders and innovators such as Microsoft, Google, Intel, and Apple and move on to jobs in a variety of areas including: software development; computer security; internet and e-commerce; aerospace; micro-surgery; biomedicine and bioinformatics; academia; and R&D in both the private and public sectors.

Greg Hager

Greg Hager, Professor of Computer Science

"Our team wants to break surgical procedures down to simple gestures" Greg Hager says, "that can be represented mathematically by computer software." By doing so, researchers will be able to recognize how well individual surgeries are performed and improve the quality and outcomes of surgical procedures.
