The Whiting School of Engineering encourages students to use their skills and expertise for the betterment of society.

Two student groups that address these issues at the international level are the Johns Hopkins chapters of Engineers without Borders and Engineers for a Sustainable World.

Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without BordersThe mission of Engineers Without Borders - USA (EWB-USA) is to partner with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects while developing internationally responsible engineering students.

In the summer of 2006, the JHU chapter of EWB-USA completed on a water supply project in Kwazulu-Natal province in eastern South Africa and is now working on similar projects in Equador and Guatemala.
