Dean Nick Jones: Bio

Dean Nick JonesNicholas P. Jones was appointed Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering in August 2004.  A native of New Zealand, he received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Auckland in 1980 and came to the U.S. to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees from Caltech in 1981 and 1986, respectively.  Dr. Jones joined Johns Hopkins as a faculty member with the Department of Civil Engineering in 1986 and was appointed chair of the department in 1999.  In 2002, he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to head the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering until his return to Hopkins to serve as fourth dean of the Whiting School of Engineering.  Dr. Jones’ research interests include various aspects of structural dynamics, flow-induced vibration, and wind engineering.  He has received numerous awards for both teaching and research and serves on a number of national committees, including the Wind Effects Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute, ASCE’s Aerospace Division Executive Committee, as well as recently serving on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Wind Engineering, to name just a few.  Dr. Jones until recently served as editor of the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics.
